Black Moth Super Rainbow - Start A People [2007]
electronic, experimental
192

Unlike their newer albums (Which are also great in other ways), Black Moth Super Rainbow create something that sounds surprisingly like Boards of Canada. It's a good thing. I've also seen BMSR described as "Summer Music" and I tend to agree. If you're a longboarder, it's definitely some good cruising music for a sunny day.

Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog [2007]
folk, indie rock
v2

The Shepherd's Dog is much less traditionally folky than Sam Beam's previous albums, it instead has a greater level of depth, and to my ears, warmth, to it. It's worth accepting that Mr Beam is kind of a genius.

Giants - Old Stories [2008]
post-rock, instrumental
v2

As far as I'm concerned, it takes a lot to be a stand-out post rock album now. I can't pin down what is so great about this album, but it is one of my  favourites from last year. Compeltely beautiful. Whispered Ears is a regular evening chillout track for me.

02 Vessels (6:54)
03 O Tide (6:49)

Rosetta

Rosetta, in my eyes, are undisputable the best metal band around. They're what got me into 'metal' and harder music as a whole, and continue to blow my mind every time I decide to listen again. Take heed, if you have not heard Rosetta, you really must.

Rosetta - The Galilean Satellites [2005]
sludge metal, post-metal, drone metal
v0

Apparently, if you line up the first and second discs to start playing at the same time, it turns into some sort of new masterpeice - I don't know why I still haven't done it. First disc is their typical hard, epic sludge. Second disc is hard, epic drone.

2-1 Deneb

Rosetta & Balboa - Project Mercury [2006]
sludge metal, post-metal
192

Balboa isn't bad.

01 Balboa - Primitive Accumulation
02 Balboa - Kaddish
03 Balboa - Planet of Slums
04 Rosetta - TMA-1
05 Rosetta - Clavius
06 Rosetta & Balboa - Project Mercury

Rosetta - Wake/Lift [2007]
sludge metal, post-metal
v0

Probably their most widely acclaimed album, probably for good reason. It opens amazingly and never gets bad. Definitely the place to start if you're new.

01 Red in Tooth and Claw
02 Lift (part 1)
03 Lift (part 2)
04 Lift (part 3)
05 Wake
06 (Temet Nosce)
07 Monument

Rosetta - The Cleansing Undertones of Wake/Lift [2007]
drone metal
v0

A strictly drone album inspired by Wake/Lift. (Not something to sync with Wake/Lift like the second disc of The Galilean Satellites) I've found it makes a good theme for power-naps. Mostly because it's powerful.

Dronæment vs. Rabbits Sorrow - Between Two Yearthousands [2001]

Found this on DFBM a while ago and have been falling asleep to it ever since. For dark drone it's surprisingly peaceful and sleep-inducing.

And So I Watch You From Afar - And So I Watch You From Afar [2009]
post-rock, instrumental
160 :(

I think this is a pretty hyped album. If so, it deserves all the hype it's getting. If not, it should be getting more hype. Just really solid instrumental in-your-face mathier post-rock. Lively and skillful playing has kept this album going on my computer and mp3 player for the last couple days. It's also super cheap, you can pre-order it at the link above.

Adelaide - Adelaide [2004]
post-rock, instrumental
v0

Adelaide is like... if The Album Leaf had no vocals and more... Crescendos... I guess... I like them a lot. Apparently they're super underground and awesome and don't exist anymore and now exist as a band called Small Sails which are probably cool too, I don't know though.

Vashti Bunyan - Just Another Diamond Day [1970]
folk, folk, folk
v0

Okay, so this is the 2000 re-release, but still. Beginning her career in the 1960s, Bunyan released this one album and then disappeared from the music radar until the early 2000s, and since has released another album (Lookaftering), and worked with Devendra Banhart, Animal Collective, Joanna Newsom, Max Richter and about a million others. This album is extremely chilled out, I recommend it highly.

post-hardcore, indie rock, emo

Third album from mewithoutYou - featuring guest vocals on "The Sun and The Moon" by Jeremy Enigk, and instrumentation from members of Anathallo. It's probably my favourite of theirs as a whole.

Röyksopp - Junior [2009]
electronic, dance
v0

If you've not heard Röyksopp before, definitely check out both Melody A.M. and then The Understanding first. A good album overall with a few rad songs, a lot more accessible and 'clubby' than their previous, but they've managed to keep the same awesome Röyksopp sound.

02 The Girl And The Robot (4:28)
03 Vision One (4:59)

Monolith - Eclipse [2008]
post-rock, post-metal, sludge
v0

Possibly the first 'artist submitted album' to this blog. Really nice traditional sounding ambient sludgey stuff, pretty mellow in most parts, but powerful when needed. Their myspace says they're playing a show with Rosetta. ROSETTA! That's how cool they are. Also, they do their marketing by leaking their own album. Buy it?

01 Apparition (12:55)
02 Ascend (13:11)
03 Surface ( 4:39)
04 Born Of Fire (10:05)
05 Descend (17:55)

I made my own sweet 'album art' based on this cover because I liked it so much.
