Ellen Allien & Apparat - Orchestra of Bubbles [2006]
electronic, idm, minimal
192kbps

Now I'm not massively into electronic, but I have had a soft spot for Apparat for a long time, and this collab with fellow Swedish artist Ellen Allien is probably my favourite release by both of them. Upbeat, yet chilled out electronica: a yes every time.

Lymbyc Systym - Love Your Abuser [2007]
post-rock, electronic
v0

Texas sure knows how to churn out awesome post-rock bands. These guys, as a two-man outfit, definitely straddle the more electronic side of the spectrum, and if you do nothing else with this album, at least check out "Birds". It's good.

[Video] The Presets - This Boy's In Love

You should enjoy this track. You should enjoy this video. Check out all their videos while you're at it, they're all really really cool.

I enjoyed the feel of it so much I made this rad self-portait of myself using the same atmosphere! *I'm kind of making this a habit, I guess.

Peter Broderick - Float [2008]
classical, ambient, electronic
256kbps

Peter Broderick, over the course of his so far fairly short career, has worked with Efterklang and Library Tapes, and put out quite a few records of his own.
All of which are great - Float apparently began as short solo piano pieces and evolved from there, and is one of my favourite records of 2008 (along with Broderick's folkier record, Home, which I shall probably post later.).

Algernon Cadwallader - Some Kind of Cadwallader [2008]
emo, math rock, indie rock
320kbps

If you're yearning for some Cap'n Jazz throwback, here's just the band for you. Considerably more polished, but bringing back and holding the flag for a kind of music that, as far as some people are concerned, lived and died with that one band.

This is absolute summer-time jauntiness, 'Some Kind of Cadwallader' would be a singalong anthem if the general population had better taste.

01 Casual Discussion In A Dome Between Two Temples [2:27]
02 Some Kind Of Cadwallader [2:25]

I Would Set Myself on Fire for You - Believes In Patterns [2006]
experimental/progressive screamo
v0

It's like... a fun sized screamo-flavored Maudlin of the Well, if that makes any sense. Think The Sound of Animals Fighting with screamies instead of weenie-core vocals... Kind of.

I tend to think more of a less intense Circle Takes The Square. With a violin.

You said it... and some woodwinds, or at least fake woodwinds. That's where I drew the maudlin of the Well comparison.

Speaking of Pocahaunted, I've had this sat in drafts for a good few days now, being a bit stuck on exactly how to tag it. Oops. This is an awesome album zoning-out album.

Woods - How To Survive In / In The Woods [2007]
folk, lo-fi
v2

This band has made my week completely not suck. Good going, dudes.

(I just made this exact same post, left the house for a while, and then finished publishing it, only to come and find Nat posted the very same thing while I was gone, with the same tags and everything. I chuckled.)

Woods is just/just great. It is the words lo-fi embodied in music. Has a very Grouper or Pocahaunted feel to it, while also being very Iron and Wine uppity folk goodness. It's quite a trip and pleasant. People who call it "psychedelic" can shove it.

3epkano - At Land [2007]
post-rock, instrumental
v2

Don't let their strange name fool you, this band is exceptional and totally underrated. I was listening to Grails' Black Tar Prophecies beforehand, and as soon as At Land came on I was thinking, "I wish this album was Black Tar Prophecies, it lives up to the name so much better." Ominous and powerful post-rock with strings.

1 Torture Room (5:05)
2 We Go From Tears To Shouts (4:32)
